O MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) é uma das premiações musicais mais esperadas nos Estados Unidos e premia as músicas e cantores em alta na indústria fonográfica americana. É uma premiação com tanto peso quanto o Grammy, o BET Awards e a premiação da Billboard.
Considerando a lista de indicados e a lista de vencedores, podemos dizer mais uma vez que 2016 é o ano do Rap e do Hip-Hop. Com indicações para Drake, Fergie, The Weeknd, Missy Elliot, Pharrell Williams, Rihanna, Desiigner, Chris Brown, Chance the Rapper, Fifth Harmony, Ty Dolla Sign e Kanye West, a grande estrela da noite foi a cantora Beyoncé que recebeu 11 indicações. Além de ganhar a maioria das indicações a que concorreu, Beyoncé superou a cantora Madonna nessa edição do evento, sendo a cantora que ganhou mais prêmios dessa premiação até hoje.
A premiação, assim, seguiu a tendência do BET Awards, onde Beyoncé foi a grande vencedora, mas foi diferente tanto do Grammy (onde o grande vencedor nas categorias de música Rap foi Kendrick Lammar) quanto da premiação da Billboard (onde The Weeknd foi o grande vencedor).
